Donor Heroes

FROM THE BOTTOM OF OUR HEART: Thank you, Jayden P! This 11-year-old found his way of giving back early in life.
From The Bottom Of My Heart, the nonprofit he founded at age 8, donated 5 Thanksgiving turkeys to Eva's Community Kitchen. 'With the holidays coming and COVID, we wanted to help out any way we could,' said his mother, Ana. His nonprofit distributes toys, clothes, food, and necessities to children, families, and front-line workers. Last year, his nonprofit donated backpacks and school supplies to children living in Eva's shelters.

PATRIOTIC PALLETS FOR A PURPOSE: Isabella Marino raised funds for Eva's this summer by breathing new life into some old pallets donated by LL Flooring. Marino, a rising senior at Academy of the Holy Angels in Demarest painted and sold a pallet a day for 30 days. Her donation will underwrite nearly 200 meals prepared by Eva's Community Kitchen for our neighbors in need. "I wanted to do something to help people and organizations who are providing people with food." Some of the funds she raised will also benefit Oasis - A Haven for Women and Children, the Center for Food Action, and the Father English Community Center. Isabella found out about these organizations through the Church of Saint Elizabeth. Thank you, Isabella.

#COVIDKINDNESS - We received 300 meals prepared by Toros Restaurant that were distributed out to community members on July 23. SoupKitchen411 purchased the meals through Feed NJ, their new initiative to combat food insecurity. The meal was underwritten by Spencer Savings Bank, a long-time supporter of Eva's Community Kitchen. We are proud to partner with SoupKitchen 411 to provide nutritious meals and support local restaurants.

'This is a shining example of what can happen when business leaders, community leaders, and nonprofits partner to bring help to people in need in our communities. Especially important here in Paterson, Eva's Village is incredible grateful to be the recipient and be a part of this partnership to serve our community,' said Marie Caliendo, Eva's director of philanthropy. Anita Guerrero, a Spencer Savings Bank VP, Donna Marie Fico, one of Eva's EVPs, Assad Akhter, a member of the Passaic County Board of Chosen Freeholders, NJ State Assembly Speaker Craig Coughlin, Assemblyman Benjie E. Wimberly, Eva's Community Kitchen Chef Director Dave Bein, and Huseyin Bayran, owner of Toro's Restaurant attended the event.

SOCIAL MEDIA SERENDIPITY: A Twitter post about surplus bananas in Sussex County caught John Baumgartner’s eye last Thursday. "I thought, what the heck, nothing ventured, nothing gained, and I knew Eva's could put them to good use. So I made some inquiries and was able to set up the pickup within 24 hours, knowing that bananas have a limited shelf life."

John, a long-time volunteer in Eva’s Community Kitchen, drove through the rain to pick up and deliver a truckload of bananas to Eva's the next day. "Sometimes it pays to have a pickup truck and a few hours to spare.” Inspired by this story? Find out how you can help Eva’s during the pandemic here.

DEEP ROOTS, DEEP GENEROSITY: Madeline recently donated 46 cloth masks to Eva's for residents living in our Halfway Houses. To fill the time while she and her family were quarantined, she thought of making masks and Eva's immediately came to mind - a place where her family's roots run deep. Not only were her grandparents married by Eva's founder, Msgr. Puma, but her mother, Monica, has volunteered at our Community Kitchen for years.

"We were thinking how comfortable we are in our house with a yard and are able to properly socially distance, but there are people who are at Eva's who may have a tough time doing that," she said. "I'm incredibly inspired by what Eva's has become. For us, it came very naturally to want to help out."

Donations of cloth masks are welcome for our clients and community members who come for daily to-go lunches
